Job description: The Department of Biology, Aarhus University invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position on: Forecasting biosphere-scale effects of ecological novelty using species distribution and vegetation models. This postdoc project is part of Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Overall ECONOVO aims to provide new perspectives on the future of the biosphere – to learn more, please visit our website:Starting Date and PeriodThe position is for 2 years and is available from September 1, 2025.Job descriptionThe main aim of this postdoc project is to assess how the expansion of novel ecosystems (NEs) influences global vegetation patterns, species diversity, and biosphere-climate interactions, with a focus on carbon storage, albedo, and evapotranspiration. This will be addressed using process-based vegetation models and species distribution models (SDMs), with a focus on key novelty drivers such as climate warming, rising CO₂, and trophic disruptions, while integrating key ecological processes including trophic complexity, disturbance regimes, and geodiversity. Key topics include understanding the large-scale consequences of NE expansion and exploring whether restoration and rewilding efforts can mitigate biodiversity loss and enhance climate resilience in an increasingly novel biosphere. We are open to hear the candidate’s take on this and would like the postdoc to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least three high-quality papers in this research area. We also emphasize the importance of active participation in the center’s outreach and educational endeavors, alongside promoting collaborative work with ECONOVO team members, including students.
