Job description: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) formally announced the start of its journey to Zero Waste with the launch of the Three Zeros Environmental Initiative in 2016. This is a long-term goal will include working with procurement, the office of waste reduction and recycling (OWRR) and other departments across campus.
The principal functions of the Waste and Recycling Specialist are:

  • Collect, analyze and track waste and recycling data from across the UNC-CH campus.
  • Report and examine UNC-CH’s waste and recycling data and other sustainability indicators.
  • Manage the Zero Waste goal with multiple departments throughout the University through planning and implementation of various projects that seek to reduce waste going to landfill.
  • Manage updates on projects and provide status reports on progress of the plan to get to zero waste.
  • Develop relevant key performance indicators to assess UNC-CH’s progress on reducing waste going to landfill and report results through presentations, publications, websites, and events.
  • Coordinate with the Strategy Committee in guiding the development and management of a roadmap to Zero Waste for UNC.
  • Participate in and report on the waste characterization effort for campus.
  • Evaluate proposed project ideas and vendors in the scope of Zero Waste at UNC.

Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsFour year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceKnowledge of physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, resource management, accounting/actuarial science, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications or license.

Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental RequirementsFundamental understanding of waste management processes, methodologies, and applications. Ability to develop and communicate the business case and budgets for cost-effective policies and actions. This position primarily works in an office environment but occasionally may be required to do field work which could require bending, reaching, stooping, climbing ladders/stairs, lifting and exposure to extreme heat and/or cold conditions.
