The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 32 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs two consultants to assist with all their communications requirements, including strategic communications, media relations, digital, web-based, print and currently does not have the relevant professional expertise internally. Specific tasks and responsibilities The consultants will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s communications work: Strategic advice · Provide strategic advice in the development of strategic communications plans. · Review and build on the current draft communications plan looking at: objectives, identified audiences, messaging, spokespeople and proposed approach to media relations and member communications coordination. Strategic communications Provide advice to senior figures · Develop communication plans, member engagement plans, public outreach plans, strategies, and goals for responding · Review current member and media communications strategies and propose new strategies to facilitate the engagement process · Manage and update member and media outreach plans as process progresses Communications content · Draft and/or review talking points, media statements, press releases, web text, emails, social media messaging for targeted audiences · Support articulation of the overall value proposition for the alliance. · Reviewing and developing content, including media messages, public statements. Media monitoring and engagement · Current sentiment analysis · Monitor online and social media messaging for emerging issues and provide an overview of community and stakeholder sentiment · Execute media engagement strategies · Develop a leak strategy and scenario planning document to respond effectively to any leaks, ensuring preparedness and swift action · Media training for nominated spokespeople as needed · Ongoing media support and media handling, this includes developing press releases, media stories, pitching media for proactive engagement, and accompanying spokespeople on interviews Outputs and deliverables · Strategic advice delivered to senior leaders · Enhanced communications with members and other stakeholders · Communications calendar · Gather statistics and feedback to improve communications · Media list and analytics maintained · Clear and effective communications content produced ensuring consistent tone The consultants shall be under the overall supervision of Head of UNEP FI and report directly to UNEP FI’s Climate Lead and UNEP FI’s Co-lead Communications, working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s Banking Communications Lead.Qualifications/special skillsEducation: A bachelor’s degree in communications, modern languages, international relations, political science, public relations or a related field. Professional Experience: At least ten (10) years’ working experience in communications, PR, journalism or marketing. Extensive experience in all aspects of strategic communications, communications best practices, including media relations and digital communications particularly social media.LanguagesLanguages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.Additional InformationSkills & Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work with senior leaders on communications strategy. Ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner, attention to detail. Knowledge of writing copy for web, social media, online articles and press releases is desirable. The consultant is expected to support colleagues in implementing communications strategies and work plans and media engagement. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed team working across functions. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable.
