About the roleWe’re looking for a detail focused and relationship-oriented Transport Contracts Engineer to join our Infrastructure Group and support the day-to-day delivery of Council’s road maintenance and renewal contracts.In this role, you’ll oversee contract administration, ensure reporting is accurate and timely, monitor contractor performance, and support the delivery of safe and sustainable outcomes for Palmerston North’s transport network. You’ll work closely with the Service Manager – Roading, contractors, and colleagues across Council to ensure contracts run smoothly, risks are managed, and opportunities for innovation are identified and implemented.This is a full-time, permanent position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.Your focus in this role will include:

  • Managing the day-to-day administration of the road maintenance and renewal contract, including variations, monthly claims, and reporting.
  • Building strong working relationships with contractors and internal teams to deliver on contract outcomes.
  • Monitoring contract performance, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Providing accurate and timely documentation and ensuring supplier data is well maintained.
  • Representing Council’s interests in external forums and contributing to the development of best-practice contract processes.
  • Supporting other teams across the Infrastructure Group with contract management advice and reporting.

About youYou’ll bring a blend of contract management expertise, transport sector experience, and strong interpersonal skills. You’re someone who thrives on getting the details right, spotting opportunities to improve systems, and collaborating to get results.To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • A degree in contract management, engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in transport, roading or traffic engineering, plus 5 years’ experience in contract administration.
  • A strong understanding of contract frameworks, risk assessment, and supplier performance management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail, data accuracy, and a focus on delivering value.
  • Confidence using business systems and an understanding of procurement principles.
