Job description: DescriptionGeneral Description: The Tourism Specialist performs work of considerable difficulty by developing, creating, supporting, and implementing a marketing/public information campaign for an assigned department; performs related work as required.Organization: The Tourism Specialist position reports directly to the Director of Tourism and supervises no staff.Essential Functions:

  • Increase community awareness of department services, programs, and activities
  • Partner with appropriate personnel to develop and implement a marketing campaign and evaluate it on a regular basis, making or recommending improvements and/or adjustments as needed
  • Use social, digital, and other vehicles to engage internal and external audiences
  • Format and update digital communication systems
  • Stay abreast of current marketing trends and make recommendations to supervisors about ways to improve existing marketing efforts
  • Conceptualize, design, and produce requested products, working closely with clients until product is complete
  • Maintain County print policies and standards of consistency and branding of departments and County logos
  • Manage distribution of publicity materials for department
  • Maintain weekly event calendar updates
  • Contribute to program development and provide program support.
  • Assists with inventory management, coordination and promotion.
  • Assists with data management of countywide tourism and event calendars

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at one time; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; demonstrated teamwork and collaborative work skills; ability to work professionally with high profile presenters; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook, proficient and comfortable using a personal computer; comfortable in a social media environment, including creating and submitting posts; ability to work evenings and weekends; ability to drive a County vehicle; knowledge of the methods, practices and techniques of marketing and community relations; demonstrated skill in graphic design and relevant software (not required, but preferred); employ various strategies and methods to market various events, programs, and services to a broad audience; consult with colleagues to design marketing campaigns and high-quality, well-written materials; develop measurable objectives to review and evaluate the success of marketing strategies and communications; working knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator; excellent presentation skills; excellent customer service skills; excellent time management and organizational skills; pre-press and production knowledge.Essential, Experience and Training:Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communication, Graphic Design, Business, or related field. -OR- any equivalent combination of training and experience.Special Conditions:

  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License
  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License
  • Twelve-month probationary period
  • Work beyond normal work schedule, to include occasional evening meetings and weekend activities
