E tῡ ki te kei o te waka, kia pakia koe e ngā ngaru o te wā.Stand at the stern of the canoe and feel the spray of the future biting at your faceMō te tūnga | About the roleThe Financial Crime Group (FCG) is comprised of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Asset Recovery Units (ARU), Money Laundering Teams (MLT) and Virtual Assets Team (VAT) with 200 staff and a presence across all 12 Policing Districts.The purpose of the FCG is to investigate and deny criminals the opportunity to benefit from their offending or to re-invest in criminal activity. They investigate complex asset recovery investigations under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009, individuals involved in money laundering under the Crimes Act 1961, and operationalise intelligence from the NZFIU and the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009.The Virtual Assets Team was established in January 2024 to provide a dedicated resource to grow NZ Police’s capability in identifying and investigating the growing presence of virtual assets within financial investigations. The team currently consists of a Supervisor and three Specialist Investigators. The VAT investigators identify, trace, and restrain virtual assets that have been used to facilitate or are the proceeds of crime.The VAT provides subject matter expertise and operational support to both criminal and proceeds of crime investigations within FCG. They provide training and upskilling across FCG, including guidance around best practice, and ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place internally, and with key partners including the Official Assignee (OA), Industry, and International Partners.This position presents an opportunity for someone wishing to develop their leadership skills, technical knowledge and experience with Virtual Assets and the emerging risks they present. The Supervisor – VAT is responsible for leading investigation phases involving virtual assets, undertaking blockchain investigation and analysis, report and affidavit writing, and providing subject matter expertise advice to MLT, ARU, FIU and Crown Solicitors.While the team is located at PNHQ, a move to Prosser Street in Porirua is slated for 2026/27.Key Accountabilities:
