The Forum engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) is a multistakeholder platform hosted by the Forum that aims to shape a more sustainable and inclusive world by ending plastic pollution. It works through both a global and national platform, bringing together public, private, and civil society leaders to develop joint solutions to the plastic pollution crisis, which are both pragmatic and ambitious.Why we are recruitingGPAP is seeking a skilled Plastic Value Chain and Policy Specialist, to drive project management, knowledge creation and stakeholder engagement at the intersection of plastic pollution reduction policies and sustainable trade.Over 170 countries are currently engaged in negotiations to reach an international, legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. At the same time, sustainable trade policies are increasingly considered as useful tools to bolster plastic action worldwide. The specialist will play a key role in GPAP’s ongoing efforts to connect the plastic pollution, green industrialisation and trade agendas by informing decision-making and community engagement, through our National Plastic Action Partnerships. The specialist will also drive knowledge curation on multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) that have a bearing on plastic pollution reduction.Reporting lines and interactionsThe Specialist will be based at the World Economic Forum’s Geneva office, within the Global Plastic Action Partnership team, reporting to Lead, Policy and Sustainable Trade, closely collaborating with colleagues in the Forum’s Centre for Regions, Geopolitics and Trade, and Centre for Energy and Materials.Key Responsibilities:Develop trade and plastics circularity studies (40%): With the support of the Lead, Sustainable Trade and subject matter experts, manage the coordination and delivery of action agendas outlining trade policy options to address plastic pollution, within our national partnerships. This includes regular meetings and check-ins to ensure consultants deliver high quality assessments and provide tailored local support to the NPAPs within budget and timelines agreed.Curate policy insights and global and national level (40%): Keep abreast of key policy developments globally, that can influence plastic pollution reduction efforts. In particular, closely follow the negotiations to reach a global plastics treaty, discussions at the WTO Dialogue on Plastic Pollution (DPP), and developments at the Basel Convention COPs as well as with the ability to establish the links between the global level and the implementation in national policiesManage a community of subject matter experts & key IOs and UN stakeholders (10%): With the support of Lead, Sustainable Trade & Head Community engagement, create and manage a community of experts on global plastic policy, circular plastic policy and trade, chemicals & waste policies, green industrialisation and, both at the global and national levels.GPAP representation. team and event support (10%): Present GPAP and the Forum’s work at key events and conferences, such as at the WTO DPP meetings, Global Framework for Chemicals, BSR COP and other plastic related conventions/meetings. Provide backstopping support to GPAP leads in coordinating and delivering high-impact sessions and events that promote our work and inform decision making.Preferred requirements:Master’s degree in Economics, International relations, public policy or International Trade, or a related field.5-6 years of experience in economic policy, trade and investment, circular value chains or a related field. Experience in plastic related policies is highly desirable (e.g. EU PPWR or establishment of national regulations around plastic consumption/production/management like EPR, bans or waste management more broadly.)Demonstrated knowledge of the dynamics of Multilateral Environmental Agreements including the negotiations for a global plastic treaty with a good sensitivity on the nuance of positions as well as the ability to link the political side to the economic side incl. impact on businessesInterest working on issues in sustainable trade and green industrialisationStrong project and event management skills and experience in leading multi-stakeholder initiativesEntrepreneurial and solutions-oriented mindset, and an ability to work with minimal supervisionExcellent analytical abilities and proficiency in creating impactful reports and presentations.Superior communication skills, with fluency in English.
