(Fall Semester: September 3, 2025 – December 2, 2025, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-11:30am; In-Person)COURSE DESCRIPTION: Graphic Design 1 builds upon the activities, languages, tools, and techniques developed in Design Process 1 and 2 through the lens of narrative practices. Approaches to linear and non-linear storytelling are examined through audio/visual composition, data driven narrative, and spatial interaction. Information gathering through research methods in conjunction with concepts from social sciences – race, class, gender – and/or the humanities – politics, geography, history-enhance existing experimental, exploratory, iterative investigative processes. Ways of creating verbal and visual documentation and dissemination outputs, along with system-based practices are used throughout the course.RESPONSIBLITIES: Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: participation in curriculum coordination meetings (3x per term), course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, rubric and written-comment based assessment, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; performance review, assessment of teaching materials; responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant should have a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or another relevant discipline, and/or equivalent professional experience. Outstanding communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to support and resource independent studio investigations, are essential to teaching at this level. A demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and proven ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population of students and faculty underpin all academic positions at OCAD U.A candidate should have a working knowledge of the following to support student skill development in technology, design practice(s):Adobe Creative Suite including After Effects and Premier ProDesign and technical considerations for print and screen (type, image, etc.)Working knowledge of other motion and design software an assetIn addition, a candidate should have:

  • A current body of work within the professional design and/or academic disciplines as it relates to the course description
  • A capacity to translate varied design principles, practices, and terminology(gies) into concise lectures, discussions, demonstrations, resources, (etc.), into open dialogues and sustained critiques to support student progress
  • Experience and aptitude for highly iterative, process-oriented work without the restriction of fixed outcomes or expectations
  • Adaptability to a variety of learning styles and student learning needs
  • Outstanding communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to support and resource independent studio investigations

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with salary level of $7,508.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
