The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill multiple APS6 Senior Statistical Analyst roles across multiple branches working on Household Statistics collections.The branches are responsible for the production of key datasets and statistics related to Australian households.About the roleResponsibilities are varied depending on the individual’s skills, their role and the requirements of their team. All team members are in household statistics teams with responsibilities related to questionnaire design, user research, survey and data model design, data analysis and dissemination activities.Senior Statistical Analyst (APS6) primary responsibilities include:

• Working with internal and external stakeholders and customers to identify data needs and develop fit-for-purpose data collection solutions, including efficient questionnaire and data model designs and processing workflows.
• Designing and testing data collection instruments, including cognitive and usability user research of questionnaires and forms. Finding the balance between managing respondent burden while ensuring statistical needs from stakeholders are met.
• Supporting data collection activities including preparing materials, interviewer documentation and interviewer training.
• Analyse and interpret survey and administrative data as required.
• Develop process flows to define metadata, clean data and problem solve to resolve any issues.
• Undertaking quality assurance of aggregate data and statistics to ensure consistency and coherence with other data.
• Producing estimates, counts and other aggregate statistics.
• Undertaking analysis to discover relationships between data items.
• Telling the story behind the data in an engaging and meaningful way; writing media releases on the data that are accurate and interesting to the public.
• Providing leadership and support to junior Statistical Analysts, including developing their data capability.
• Managing data projects with competing priorities.
• Contribute to broader ABS projects related to furthering the development of household statistics.

What we are looking for (selection criteria)Senior Statistical Analysts at the APS6 level typically have previous professional experience in a data or a statistical role. They use their analytical and conceptual skills to design collection solutions, based on stakeholder requirements. These solutions may be via direct collect from respondents in the form of a survey or an administrative solution. Problem solving is a key part of the role to find a fit-for-purpose solution. These roles involve additional people and project management responsibilities, including developing analytical capability.We are looking for people who already have experience in data/statistical roles and are keen to broaden their skill set, but have most or all of the following:

• Ability to turn data into quality statistical outputs, including conducting quality and coherency checks to produce fit for purpose statistics
• Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders and customers to identify data needs and develop fit-for-purpose data collection solutions.
• Ability to design and test data collection instruments, including conducting cognitive and usability user research of questionnaires and forms.
• Leadership skills and staff management capabilities, including demonstrated experience leading a team and developing people’s data and analytical capability
• Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to deliver quality outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment
• Strong oral, written and communication skills, including the ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders

Also desirable are:

• Experience with or the ability to learn one or more statistical programming languages, such as Python, R, SAS or SQL
• Knowledge or applied experience in agile scrum methodology, project management applications such as Jira.
• Academic qualifications in statistics, data science, mathematics, econometrics, economics, accounting, finance, psychology/social sciences or another field with a strong quantitative component.
