Provides support and assistance to researchers and to research sponsors (industry and government) to negotiate and formulate contractual research agreements. Ensures that such funding is obtained on terms and conditions acceptable and beneficial to the University and to the researchers conducting the projects.Specific Accountabilities

• Negotiates, prepares and reviews contract, collaborative research and research funding agreement terms and conditions with Canadian, U.S. and foreign private sector, government departments (federal, provincial and municipal) and not-for-profit funding agencies to obtain preferred terms and conditions governing the performance of externally sponsored research and development. Reviews and prepares different types of agreements, of varying complexity, for execution and signature of the Director (or delegate).
• Reviews budgets and approves hand-off forms/processes to other VP Research and Innovation services and Finance for authorization and opening of research trust accounts, crediting of funds for the project and ensuring that business processes comply with funding agency administrative and regulatory compliance requirements. Approves the distribution of indirect costs (overhead funds) and any professional fees associated with research contract.
• Maintains an active external liaison with major (recurring) research sponsors as well as an active peer and professional development network at other institutions to benchmark and share best practices, as appropriate.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

• Undergraduate degree in business, commerce or law and a minimum of ten years’ experience, or an MBA and a minimum of five years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience
• Knowledge and experience in research management practices normally acquired through University training or research management experience
• Knowledge of project management, budgeting, research contract law (including intellectual property, insurance and indemnification matters) and university accounting procedures (all assets)
• Extensive knowledge of University of Ottawa policies, procedures and management systems
• A minimum of five to seven years’ progressively responsible experience with sponsored research agreements, research management and/or intellectual property matters in an academic setting
• Familiarity with the academic research enterprise and knowledge of federal granting councils’ programs, policies and processes for collaborative research with industry, and other sponsors of university research in Canada
• Excellent understanding of university research contract portfolios, research funding and university structures in general
• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize, with exceptional time management skills
• Demonstrated project management skills
• Demonstrated decision-making, problem-solving, critical thinking, analysis, risk assessment, organizational, negotiation, needs assessment and administrative skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment under pressure and with firm deadlines
• Demonstrated budgeting and analysis skills using spreadsheet software (Excel)
• Experience using computer systems and software such as Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) or equivalents
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (spoken and written) in both official languages
• Bilingualism — English and French (spoken and written)
