  • Salary range: $110,357 – $127,333 (pro rata) plus super plus salary packaging
  • Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model

About the role
Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is seeking two dedicated Senior Lawyers to join the Appeals and Strategic Litigation team. This is a small, supportive and collaborative team of senior lawyers, with a dedicated practice to provide advice and casework in a diverse and interesting range of criminal appeals and public interest strategic litigation.You will provide high quality legal advice to criminal law practice partners and other stakeholders regarding potential appeals and reviews in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia. You will prepare written cases and appear as an advocate in appeals and reviews in the Supreme Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and High Court as appropriate. You will also supervise and mentor legal staff conducting case work in higher court appeals to the Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia, as required.This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
  • Ability to handle complex appeals, judicial reviews, and advocacy in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Court.
  • Ability to analyse complex cases, assess merit for higher court appeals, and develop strategic litigation initiatives.
  • Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and train junior lawyers, fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment.
  • High-level oral and written advocacy skills, with the ability to influence funding decisions and develop clear, strategic advice.
