We are looking for an engaged and enthusiastic Senior General Ledger Accountant to join our Business Office team.This person will be responsible for day-to-day accounting operations and the month-end close process. This person will be an integral part of the Business Office as well as work closely with the Advancement, Admissions and Human Resources departments. The position requires effective organizational and time-management skills, and a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, critical thinking, and confidentiality while meeting time-sensitive deadlines. A successful candidate must be knowledgeable of accounting standards, audit processes and internal control protocols, and proficient with technology to support accounting operations.
- Lead month-end close activities, including recording recurring and ad hoc journal entries and preparing balance sheet account reconciliations for accounts such as cash, investments, tuition & pledge receivables, prepaids, fixed assets, accrued expenses, bond liability and intercompany receivables/payables.
- Monitor bank activity daily, working with Advancement and Admissions to ensure proper accounting of receipts, and reconcile bank accounts monthly, following up on stale-dated checks and other reconciling items.
- Perform monthly and annual gift and pledge reconciliations in collaboration with the Advancement team and correctly record revenue and pledges in the general ledger.
- Record ancillary income in the general ledger, ensuring proper attribution to school programs.
- Create semi-monthly payroll and benefit journal entries, reconcile related balance sheet accounts, and reconcile the general ledger to the Form 941 quarterly.
- Prepare monthly construction expense schedules, commitment schedules and bond draw requests. Perform accounting and reconciliation of bond trust accounts.
- Record fixed asset acquisitions, maintain the depreciation schedule for fixed assets and record disposals.
- Review monthly income and expense coding to ensure accuracy of financial reports.
- Assist in annual Audit and 990 Tax preparation by providing accurate schedules of information, particularly in regard to pledge and gift accounting, fixed asset accounting, bond accounting, and construction.
- Perform research, reconciliation, and other general accounting tasks as requested and necessary to meet department reporting deadlines.
- Stay up-to-date on changes in accounting regulations, best practices, and industry trends, and proactively identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Provide support and information to employees and enrolled families.
- Ensure all finance processes are documented and signed off by relevant parties, maintaining a record of all completed financial tasks.
- Enforce internal controls to safeguard assets and uphold strong financial reporting in compliance with organizational policies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance with significant accounting course work preferred.
- At least five years of prior accounting experience, preferable in a non-profit or school setting.
- Attention to detail and accuracy, ability to plan and organize, strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with Veracross, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented office environment.
Work Environment
This role requires in-office presence and the ability to climb stairs. Must be able to bend, stoop, reach and lift up to 25 pounds.Compensation
