Job description: We are looking for a Senior Customs Advisor for a 6-month contract position, with possible extensions in Calgary, Alberta. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.Hybrid schedule, at least 4 days in the office. 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. It is NOT a remote role.Role Description
This position is part of the Customs team within Treasury & Risk – Finance division – responsible for the governance and compliance activities/processes that support the import/export of commodities, various oil and gas equipment and other tangible goods (parts and materials). This role involves ensuring compliance with customs regulations, conducting risk assessments, developing strategies and enhancing controls to minimize potential risks related to the import and export of goods. This role will collaborate with the applicable business units and other supporting functions to facilitate cross border movement effectively and compliantly. Success in this role will be dependent upon experience designing and instituting internal control processes, close attention to detail, strong analytical and communication skills while managing competing priorities and maintaining good business acumen.Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on pre- and post-trade activities and expectations.
  • Liaise with logistics teams and business units to provide guidance regarding applicable commercial documents/content required for customs clearance. Develop risk mitigation strategies and action plans.
  • Review commercial contracts and agreements and provide recommendations regarding import and export commercial terms, as required.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the corporate customs and trade compliance control framework
  • Conduct detailed risk assessments on customs operations and processes
  • Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate
  • Adhere to and drive continuous improvement of corporate customs and trade compliance procedures and processes (process clarity and refinement), alongside process efficiencies.
  • Develop and implement enhanced control processes for import/export activities, and close gaps where required. Liaise with third-parties and work activities already underway with the customs compliance team.
  • Educate and collaborate with stakeholders on import/export matters and information relevant to their respective roles, while continuously reinforcing expectations.
  • Evaluate internal risk assessment and monitor changes to import/export regulations and other considerations of international trade affecting the company’s operations.
  • Ensure compliance with import/export regulations and company policies.
  • Stay updated with industry changes and trends that could impact the organization’s risk profile.
  • Contribute to Customs team initiatives including data streamlining and analytics.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics or related field.
  • Experience in risk analysis, specifically in customs or international trade.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Oil & Gas industry and/or at a customs brokerage firm supporting the oil & gas industry is a strong asset
  • Strong working knowledge of the oil and gas business, projects and equipment.
  • Experience as a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) focusing on compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of import/export procedures and Canada/U.S. Customs laws, rules & regulations.
  • Data analytics and visualization experience required; data science experience considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively on a dynamic team while managing competing priorities.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point.
