Job description: Job DescriptionKPMG’s Climate Change & Sustainability service is focussed on assisting a wide variety of Australian and international clients to understand and optimise their organisational response to the challenges and opportunities of climate change, carbon management and emission reduction.We work with leading organisations across industries and sectors (including financial services, extractives, power, utilities, retail, manufacturing, infrastructure and government) and deliver a wide range of exciting, action-orientated services including:

  • Climate-related risk and opportunity assessments and scenario analysis.
  • Climate hazard modelling and financial quantification of climate risks and opportunities.
  • Carbon baselines for operational and financed emissions.
  • Decarbonisation and net-zero strategies.
  • Integration of climate strategy into sustainability, risk management and corporate processes.
  • Development of innovative and practical recommendations to manage climate risk and maximise opportunities in the low carbon economy.
  • Managing and reporting on climate, carbon and GHG data and developing KPIs.
  • Supporting the development of climate related disclosures in alignment with various frameworks and standards (AASB, IFRS S1 & S2 and TCFD).

In response to growing client demand for our services, there is an exciting opportunity for an experienced climate risk professional to join our team in Sydney as a Senior Consultant (3-4 years’ relevant experience).How are you extraordinary?In this role, you will take guidance from Managers, Associate Directors or Directors in the execution of work activities on engagements. The role:

  • Stays at the cutting edge of technology and innovation, continually building these elements into our service offering.
  • Inputs and contributes to the planning and substantive delivery of engagements, including research and analysis, PowerPoint presentation design, quantitative modelling, work plans, timelines, project management and resource allocation.
  • Takes responsibility on projects or engagements below management-level, and works with less experienced team members, including directing and reviewing the work outputs and assisting with training and career development of Consultants.

  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative climate risk and opportunity assessments and scenario analysis, with multiple climate risk scenarios across various time horizons.
  • Understanding and manipulating large datasets, including climate model output, geospatial data and emissions data.
  • Applying analytical and statistical approaches while conducting data analysis, modelling and metric development. Experience in climate hazard assessment and/or climate transition assessment and associated modelling will be favourably considered.
  • Ability to downscale global and/or regional models to national and sub-national areas, including an understanding of the complexities of translating climate and hazard projections into local contexts for risk assessment.
  • Coding experience in MATLAB, Python, R or ArcGIS
  • Knowledge of climate change and climate-related risk in a policy, research or financial or corporate context.
  • Experience in flood modelling (not necessary but desirable)
  • An understanding of the climate system, including knowledge of climate variability and extremes.
  • Knowledge of technical and regulatory developments in relation to climate change and carbon, including an awareness of global and domestic frameworks (IPCC, UNFCCC etc) and established and emerging standards (ASSB, ISSB, TCFD etc), highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to develop and strengthen client relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and initiative to address challenges.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage own workflow and that of others.
  • Experience in a consultancy, academic setting or research institute with technical expertise in climate change.
