Job description: Lead IWMI’s economics research on water-food-energy-climate policies in the South Asian region with the objective of influencing policies and programs aimed at poverty reduction, sustainable resource use and climate resilience. The geographic focus initially is India and Bangladesh. The candidate is also expected to contribute in IWMI’s efforts in building strong strategic partnerships with stakeholders in the region. The role encompasses developing project proposals, project coordination and management, undertaking demand-driven high-quality research and stakeholder engagement for effective influence of policies and programs.As a Regionally Recruited Staff position, qualified candidates in South Asia are encouraged to apply.RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research to build an understanding across a range of issues related to poverty reduction and livelihood diversification, environmental sustainability, climate change adaptation, water-energy food-nexus, sustainable expansion of clean energy irrigation and climate smart agriculture.
  • Lead IWMI’s inter-disciplinary action research projects and partnerships with government and non-government stakeholders. This would involve financial and project management issues, timely and effectively delivery of promised outputs.
  • Identify future research partnership and finance opportunities emerging in South Asia and beyond. Develop and/or contribute to new research proposals for external donor funding, including bilateral funding.
  • Contribute as an economist in interdisciplinary projects within IWMI and CGIAR Science Programs.
  • Develop new relationships and sustain existing engagement with key stakeholders including government and donors in the South Asian region for project implementation and policy advocacy.
  • Integrate research findings into effective policy recommendations and disseminate information through relevant guidelines and policy briefs; and facilitate and support the adoption of practical, science-based, policy solutions and decisions by national and international partners, authorities, governments, and donors.
  • Author/Co-author articles for peer-reviewed publication, in a timely manner, jointly and independently, in accordance with IWMI’s policies and procedures for publication of research outputs.

RequirementsEXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGEEssential

  • PhD in economics, development economics, agricultural economics, or environmental economics or master’s degree in the same disciplines with strong publications record in peer reviewed journals and 10 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to water-energy-food nexus, solar irrigation, and groundwater governance in India and Bangladesh.
  • Experience in water-related research and/or ability to apply knowledge from development or natural resource economics to water- and agriculture-related scenarios.
  • Substantive experience in micro-econometrics, economic modeling, and optimization to analyze production, food security and environmental issues.
  • A minimum of 5 years of research for development experience.
  • Track record of publications in relevant international peer- reviewed journals.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience in farm- level survey design, data collection and policy analysis.
  • A network of research and field partners in different parts of India and Bangladesh.

SKILLS & ABILITIESEssential

  • Sound analytical skills, and the ability to synthesize and write persuasively in English.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English with the ability to explain complex development challenges and interdisciplinary work to a policy audience.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, managers, and other stakeholders in a multicultural setting, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams as a leader and team member.

Desireable

  • Ability to design and apply research to understand behavioural models and farmers preferences with choice experiments or adoption studies.
  • Ability to design and analyze quasi-experimental or randomized control trials with respect to price and finance incentives and water-related innovations.
  • Ability to develop and apply statistical, and computational models, including optimization frameworks for resource allocation, demand management, and policy interventions, utilizing techniques such as linear programming or agent-based modeling to address water resource challenges.
  • Knowledge of regional languages.
