Are you passionate about plant ecology and eager to make a tangible impact on koala habitat restoration? We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Restoration Ecology to join a dynamic and multi-disciplinary research project led by Associate Professor Rachael Gallagher. This project, titled “Restoration by design: improving biodiversity outcomes from Australia’s restoration investments,” is funded by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water (NSW DCCEEW) and the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) – Resilient Landscapes Hub.In this position, you will play a crucial role in evaluating the efficacy of previous efforts to restore koala habitats and translating these findings into policy-relevant recommendations for government partners. Your work will involve understanding the type, design, and maintenance of restoration activities and their relationship with ecosystem outcomes to ensure investments result in effective ecological outcomes. You will examine restoration practices from historical koala habitat restoration sites across up to four regional locations, assessing key features and habitat use by koalas to identify successful practices. Additionally, you will review and survey current and recent koala habitat restoration sites to determine if successful practices identified in the initial stages of the project are being deployed and their likelihood of achieving effective restoration outcomes. As part of your responsibilities, you will co-design and implement a field work program with NSW DCCEEW to meet research objectives in consultation with project partners. You will conduct timely research to meet NESP Resilient Landscapes project milestones, develop and apply methods for defensible scientific results, and contribute to daily research tasks. You will also collaborate with team members and project partners, produce and analyse accurate data, prepare quality reports relevant to the funding agreement, and prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 30 August 2026 based at Hawkesbury campus, although travel to other campuses of the University and locations may be required.
