We are the Transport team who provide Civil Engineering services to enable the delivery of the Christchurch City Council’s capital programme.We are committed to continuous improvement and ensure that our design services are efficient, sustainable, aligned with technological advancements and providing solutions that address the effects of climate change.About the role | Ko te mahi neiAs the Principal Traffic Engineer, you will be providing leadership in the investigation and design of traffic engineering, traffic signals and public transport projects. This key role contributes directly to the success of our capital works programme and the future of Christchurch’s transport network.In this role, you will:

  • Provide expert traffic engineering and signals design services to support the delivery of the Council’s capital programme and other business units within Council.
  • Act as the principal professional designer on a range of complex projects relating to traffic engineering traffic signals.
  • Lead and mentor team members, playing a key role in their learning and development.
  • Offer technical leadership in the design and operation of traffic signals and ITS infrastructure.
  • Collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams internally and with external regional and national agencies, particularly Waka Kotahi NZTA, to deliver sound technical advice to elected members and Council staff.
  • Support project managers by providing design leadership and ensuring high-quality project outcomes, including assisting at Community Boards and Council meetings.

About you | Ko Koe TēneiYou will be degree qualified in engineering or planning with at least 10 years’ experience working in traffic engineering and transportation planning. You will have sound knowledge of the design and operation of traffic signals, ITS infrastructure, and well as intersection modelling experience. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the industry, you would keenly follow and participate in professional development and emerging best practice. Location – This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices – 53 Hereford Street
Salary – The salary band for this position goes from $126,230 – $140,255 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
