With great work to do.Mō te Tūranga | About The RoleYou will sit within our Deposit Taking (DT) team that provides technical leadership to support our regulatory activities for the banking and non-bank deposit taking sectors. You’ll play a key role in providing technical expertise into our risk based and intelligence led supervision approach, which helps identify and focus our efforts on areas that present the greatest risk of harm for consumers and financial markets.This position will bring technical knowledge of the DT sector with a particular focus on business models, risk frameworks and oversight such as monitoring, and how this is used to support fair outcomes for consumers. This will include employing a data-led approach, undertaking analysis and reporting to make evidence based regulatory decisions, and engaging with the DT sector.The Principal Adviser role helps ensure that our regulatory activity delivers to the FMA’s strategy and reinforces the FMA’s reputation as a strong, effective, efficient, proactive, fair, and respected regulator.What does a day in the life of a Principal Adviser look like?This is a new role, so there’s a bit of blue sky thinking as we approach monitoring later this year. You could be getting involved with creating roadmaps, bringing strategy to life for the team, producing reports or creating some new processes.You’ll apply your strong analytical skills to interpret legislation (e.g., the FMC Act, in particular the CoFI regime) we work with and apply it to varied projects and initiatives. You will take a coaching approach with the team from a technical leadership perspective.What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?Ultimately the work you’ll do will help support fair outcomes for consumers; and you’ll get the opportunity to be part of some interesting, challenging, and thought-provoking work at the forefront of regulatory delivery. As this is a new role, you have the opportunity to shape and influence how the DT team monitors and prioritises its work.What attributes will you have to be successful?You’ll bring deep technical experience to the team in either monitoring, operational risk, compliance or internal auditing from the financial services sector. You may come from another regulator, banking, consulting or perhaps another part of the financial services industry.The following skills and experience are key for this role:

  • Experience within a financial services environment, such as another regulator, deposit taker (first/second line risk, internal audit), consulting or perhaps another part of the financial services industry.
  • Good working knowledge of the FMC Act (in particular the CoFI regime), supervisory and monitoring strategies, practices, and processes, along with the ability and confidence to create these from scratch.
  • Demonstrated strength in communication and stakeholder engagement skills – this role involves a good deal of professional writing and working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience within a technical leadership role including coaching and mentoring.
  • Project management experience, including the confidence to lead important pieces of work.
  • Experience and enjoyment in learning and interpreting legislation – and the ambiguity that comes with this!
  • Strong critical thinking and natural curiosity.
