Join us in our groundbreaking project to develop state of the art simulation for the analysis and optimization of silicon single crystal production.The section for Manufacturing Engineering at DTU Construct is seeking two highly motivated postdocs for a project on multi-physics, multi-scale simulation of single silicon crystal manufacturing. The project is about developing the next generation of Float-Zone silicon crystals increasing the crystal diameter from today’s industry standard of 200 mm to the future crystal size of 300 mm. The project is carried out in close cooperation with Topsil GlobalWafers A/S and researchers at the Technical University of Denmark.In the project you will:

  • Investigate the multi-physical behaviour of the float zone process, addressing technical challenges and assist in proposing innovative solutions for production upscaling
  • Develop both physics-driven and data-based models for the float zone process and test these in experiments performed at lab-scale as well as based on operational data from production.
  • Contribute to publishing our models and results in high-ranking journals and conferences as well as integrating our findings into industrial practice and engineering education.

You will collaborate closely and receive support from experts in modelling of manufacturing processes and materials science at DTU, as well as engineering specialists from the project’s industrial partner.You will in combination cover multi-physics modelling of manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering as well as materials science. We are particularly looking for candidates with strong backgrounds (preferably PhDs) within mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials science, applied mathematics or physics. Specific disciplines will involve heat transfer, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials science including phase changes, numerical mathematics and data analytics based on statistics and/or machine learning. Each of the postdoc positions will be moulded over the applicants’ specific competences and interests.Responsibilities

  • To develop simulation of the float zone process from physics-based models or data-driven approaches, or the two in combination.
  • To validate and calibrate numerical models using both laboratory experiments as well as operational data from industrial production
  • To cooperate with project partners (researchers and industry) to identify key issues that must be solved to reach simulation models with the targeted predictive power.
  • To communicate scientific results, orally and in writing, to both the scientific and the industrial communities

Specific tasks will include

  • Developing solid mechanical models for the evolution of transient as well as residual stresses based on a close coupling with the heat and mass transfer as well as phase changes taking place during manufacturing.
  • Develop models of defect generation during material fabrication.
  • Developing data-driven models based on proper statistical methods to obtain correlations between process parameters and process signatures
  • Applying machine learning to large datasets originating from operation during real production.
  • Combining data-driven approaches with physics-based models in hybrid-based simulation for process optimization.
  • Developing advanced numerical models for the coupled heat and mass transfer in the float zone process including 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, applied mathematics or physics preferably in relation to multi-physics, multi-scale modelling of complex systems.
  • Good knowledge of modelling and the use of open-source as well as dedicated commercial FEM/FVM software packages.
  • Excellent English proficiency in written and oral form.
  • The ability and willingness to share and discuss results from the project with both scientists and relevant industrial partners
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
