Through integration and collaboration, we – re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.About the RoleAs the Nurse Director (Operations), you will play a key role in ensuring excellence in rural clinical outcomes, aligning with the Health New Zealand, Te Tai o Poutini vision and values. You will work closely with senior leadership, including the General Manager, Director of Nursing, Operations Managers, and Nurse Director (Workforce), to lead and support nursing teams across the West Coast.This is a pivotal leadership position requiring strategic oversight, operational expertise, and a commitment to fostering a sustainable nursing workforce in a rural health environment.Key Responsibilities

  • Workforce Leadership: Lead the daily nursing resource allocation across the region, ensuring nurse staffing meets demand and enables safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Clinical & Operational Excellence: Provide expert guidance to operational leaders, ensuring all nursing services deliver equitable, culturally competent, and timely care.
  • Leadership Development: Mentor, coach, and develop nursing leaders to empower excellence in leadership and management.
  • Quality & Integration: Oversee the development and implementation of clinical processes, standards, and services that support a consistent, integrated rural healthcare system.
  • Strategic Workforce Planning: Drive initiatives to support nursing workforce sustainability, including early pipeline development, recruitment, retention, and succession planning.
  • One Team Approach: Champion a collaborative, patient-centred model that strengthens communication, teamwork, and service consistency across the Coast.
  • Financial & Business Acumen: Co-develop and manage nursing budgets, ensuring sustainability and efficiency in resource allocation.

About youEssential Criteria:

  • New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate (no conditions)
  • Minimum 10 years – post-registration experience in nursing
  • Minimum 5 years – senior management experience, including project management expertise
  • Postgraduate qualification (preferably Master – s or PhD level)
  • Commitment to cultural competency training and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles
  • Proven leadership, management, and coaching/mentorship skills
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including budgeting and workforce planning
  • In-depth knowledge of the New Zealand healthcare system, including accreditation and quality standards
  • Full, clean NZ driver – s license

Desirable Attributes:

  • Postgraduate management qualification
  • Experience in conducting research
  • High emotional intelligence, resilience, and adaptability
  • In-depth knowledge of Employment Law, HPCA Act (2003), He Ara Oranga, and government health policies
