And we’re changing how research is done, through improved tools, technologies, methods and research culture.The Discovery Research (DR) team works to manage and develop our portfolio of activities which includes individual researchers and teams supported through our funding schemes, as well as the world-leading institutes and initiatives we support through a more targeted approach. In 2022/23, we spent £955 million on research, across the breadth of our remit. Our funding supports thousands of researchers across the world and part of our role is to find ways to forge partnerships and networks with established and new research and funding communities.We are recruiting to three roles in the newly created Strategy Implementation team within Discovery Research. The Strategy Implementation team will work to support the wider DR team, to ensure strategic alignment and effective operational delivery of DR’s ambitions. The Strategy Implementation team have three broad areas of responsibility:· Effective operational management of the DR programme, including wider organisation planning cycles such as delivery planning, budgeting and forecasting.· Leading on the ongoing development of, and reporting against, the DR strategy.· Initiating agreed routes to monitor, evaluate and learn from our portfolio.The team will collaborate across DR and with colleagues from across Wellcome, including Wellcome’s Strategy department, our Research, Equity, Influencing and Engagement departments, and with Enabling departments such as Research Funding, Finance and Legal.The Major Initiatives Programme Lead will work closely with the Head of Major Initiatives and team, to design and initiate more standardised and efficient ways of working in closer partnership with Wellcome’s portfolio of DR-led Major Initiatives. This includes partners such as the Wellcome Sanger Institute, UK Biobank, Diamond Light Source and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre. The post holder will work to ensure robust processes and governance frameworks are in place that enable timely reporting and assessment of delivery goals, identification of emerging risks and challenges, and ensuring partners operate to expected standards.In this role you will:Work with the Head of MI, and wider Discovery Research (DR) teams as appropriate, to provide technical expertise in support of the delivery of the strategic objectives of Wellcome DR’s major programmes.Provide operational management and governance leadership, both at a local programme level and to manage funding arrangements and relationships with major external partnership leads.Working with wider Wellcome teams to ensure appropriate internal stakeholder engagement and establish mechanisms for effective matrix working and collaboration across the organisation.Develop the approaches to support portfolio oversight and outcomes monitoring, gaining guidance from specialist advisers and relevant teams, and feeding in knowledge of wider policy.Advocate for Wellcome and the Major Initiatives/DR to raise the profile of the work and its impact internally and, where appropriate, externally.Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.To be successful in this role you will have:Knowledge of Wellcome’s mission and current key themes in discovery research.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels.Proven significant experience and knowledge of the delivery of impact through a complex research portfolio, particularly through partnership working and effective governance.Experience of providing programme management support to high-profile and ambitious research-relevant initiatives in a variety of settings, working with a wide range of stakeholders, including cross-culturally.Demonstrated ability to identify and manage risk, assurance and oversight of research investments in different settings.Excellent logistical, project management, problem-solving skills.
