With our wide variety of career opportunities and professional development pathways, we’re sure that you’ll enjoy the experience as much as our students do.Position PurposeLeads the development, implementation, and assessment of a conduct and safety strategy in residence that focuses on prevention and education to ensure the wellbeing of all residents and contributes to the personal, professional, and social development of students through education and enforcement of housing policies and procedures.Collaborates on student conduct and safety initiatives with Health Promotions, Protection Services, Client Relations, Facilities, Residence Life and other partners on and off campus.In this role, your responsibilities will include

  • Lead the development, implementation, and assessment of a conduct and safety strategy in residence. Apply equity, diversity, and recovery principles in the delivery of services and support. Serve as primary contact for, and actively collaborate with, a variety of stakeholders in the delivery of the conduct and safety strategy in residence.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Residence Life team on conduct and case management of incidents in residence to ensure a consistent approach to education and enforcement. Review and analyzes relevant facts; liaise with University staff, faculty and other relevant authorities to advise and inform, as necessary; meet with residents; develop recommendations for the resolution of issues and appropriate outcomes. Ensure the management of cases is consistent with University, Housing and Residence Life policies and protocols as well as other relevant legislation and guidelines including ensuring proper documentation and resolution of incidents involving residents.
  • Ensure quality training is provided to student employees to offer high quality services and support to residents which meet University policies, standards and best practice. Training includes initial on-boarding, ongoing workshops, training for identified needs or gaps, and mock simulations to ascertain the emergency readiness of the staff. Provide ongoing coaching and guidance to student employees on triaging issues and challenges, incident management practices, ensuring student safety and well-being and guidelines for case referrals and appropriate escalation of issues.
  • Liaise with key campus stakeholders to ensure all services related to resident conduct and safety are delivered according to the principles and objectives of Student health, Wellness and Support’s mandate, and in compliance with established policies and guidelines within Housing and Residence Life. Focusing on both education and enforcement, you will work to ensure services and supports meet stakeholder expectations and needs, encourage student participation in the University and broader communities, and contribute to a positive student experience overall.
  • Ensure that responses and supports for a broad range of issues and challenges that surface in a student residence community, including addressing and managing student behavior, managing, and resolving conflicts, and managing risk and incident response, align with the curricular learning model in residence.
  • Coordinate the assessment of all services and supports related to student conduct and safety in residence while taking into account current best practices and trends, student interests and needs. Thoroughly assess on an ongoing basis the effectiveness and impact of services and supports delivered by the sector and ensures continuous improvement, including developing performance indicators and establishing effective measurement methods.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, criminology, social work, social sciences or related field or a College diploma in Security Management, Emergency Management or Law and Security (or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in project management, emergency management, conflict management, or a related field, preferably in a post-secondary institution.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in post-secondary or closely related settings with progressive administrative responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal) in English and French.
  • Knowledge of student affairs and the educational and student developmental functions of a university residence system.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities in ways that build trust and confidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behavior, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students, faculty, and staff, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
  • Experience and knowledge of change management principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in an inter-professional environment with external agencies.
  • Experience in a higher education setting and knowledge of personal, social, academic and systemic barriers impacting a student’s success.
