Job description: Description of WorkThe Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is looking for an Investigator to conduct thorough preliminary investigations into complaints related to government waste, abuse, and fraud. This role requires the individual to work with a high level of attention to detail and an ability to effectively apply investigative techniques in the analysis of complex complaints.This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits including:

Out work often results in public audit reports which may included findings of noncompliance, procedural deficiencies, lack of oversight, and violations of state or federal law.   • Demonstrated ability to apply standard investigative techniques and procedures to identify, gather, and analyze evidence
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing financial records, accounting documents, and other relevant materials to uncover discrepancies, fraud, or improper financial conduct

Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or criminal justice from an appropriately accredited institution, with 18 credit hours of accounting coursework and two years of experience in auditing and/or investigating tax, financial, or securities crimes; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Supplemental and Contact InformationThe (OSA)’s mission is to provide unbiased and irrefutable audit and investigative reports so legislators, government officials, agency leaders, and others can make informed decisions, hold entities accountable, and ensure good stewardship of public funds. The Office of the State Auditor uses the Merit-Based Recruitment & Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act (SHRA) with highly qualified individuals. To receive credit for work history and credentials, the applicant must list the information on the online application form underneath the Work Experience section, specifically “Duties Summary”. Any information omitted from the application cannot be considered for qualifying credit. The State of North Carolina welcomes attached or incorporated resumes, cover letters, and reference information, but these items will not be used for screening or qualifying credit or in lieu of a completed and submitted state application. Applications for positions requiring specific coursework must be accompanied by a copy of the applicant transcripts (unofficial copies are accepted) to receive credit for this education. If applicants earned a foreign degree, foreign degrees require an official evaluation for U.S. equivalency and must be submitted to Human Resources for verification.
