The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.Job PurposeThe objective of the assignment is to support Climate Change research at IRRI with emphasis on 1) supporting the REMET-Rice Project through scientific advice and active participation in project activities as outlined below, 2) assisting in the development of new carbon market methodologies, 3) contributing to the state-of-the art assessment of Rice GHG Baseline-MRV-Accounting (World Bank project), and 3) act as senior advisor for IRRI’s GHG mitigation research.This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and is open for international applications.Roles and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the efficient implementation of the REMET-Rice Project
- a) Advising on the overall performance of the project and providing feedback and guidance to ensure proper project delivery
- b) Interacting closely with project staff through participation in project meetings and – as needed – individual consultations
- c) Advising on the practical aspects of the project outputs integration to inform the project next phase development and considering alignment
with different proposals development on enabling carbon market for rice systems. * d) Advising and contributing to scientific publications of the project outputs in particular in modelling review and for low emissions technologies evaluation
- e) Contributing to project reporting commitments and presentations
- Advise on the development of methodologies for carbon markets
- a) Work with the GoldStandard to complete one new methodology related to fertilizers incl. revision towards acceptance of the methodology by
GoldStandard * b) Conceptualize, draft, submit and (if necessary) revise a methodology that accounts for harvest and postharvest loss reduction. It is envisagedto also work with GoldStandard on this methodology but the partner may change if the project team decides so * c) Attend meetings (internal and external) on this development
- d) Contribute to a policy brief (or similar publication type) and a webinar on the methodologies (carried forward from 2024)
- e) Support the process of adapting GHG tools for interoperability and to define Scope 3 emission reductions
- Contribute to the state-of-the art assessment of Rice GHG Baseline-MRV-Accounting
- a) Assess the scientific quality of the GHG accounting methods in rice, for example, IPCC vs process-based modelling, including, examination
of methods used for estimating rice methane baselines, evaluation of the key methane emission factors and their impacts on baseline
accuracy, and review of transparency and data acquisition requirements (baseline, accounting). * b) Identify gaps in current GHG accounting methods, such as the lack of data on actual management practices, with specific case studies as examples
- c) Development of recommendations on improving baseline accuracy, accounting for regional and seasonal emission factors, and activity data
- d) Reviewing and advising other elements of the state-of-the-art assessment, such as GHG accounting tools, MRV, economic analysis of ow-emission rice practices, and policy entry points for promoting low-emission rice
- Act as senior advisor on IRRI’s GHG mitigation work
- a) Provide strategic input for IRRI’s MRV tool development and support for Tier 3 GHG monitoring
- b) Provide input and feedback for the development of new proposals and partnerships (e.g. with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)
- c) Support the submission and revision process of a manuscript on rice straw management and its implication on GHGs
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in the field of agricultural greenhouse gases, preferably rice
Skills RequiredMandatory
- Working and up-to-date knowledge of emissions research in rice systems
- Good understanding of the work plan of the IRRI current climate change projects. Excellent scientific writing skills.
