The IEC serves as the IAEA’s focal point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause, and for strengthening Member States’ preparedness for response.Main PurposeThe Incident and Emergency Assessment Officer works under the supervision of the Response System Coordinator and develops, maintains, implements and improves assessment and prognosis methodologies for nuclear or radiological incidents and emergencies in a manner consistent with IAEA Safety Standards and guidance on emergency preparedness and response. He/she performs emergency preparedness and response oriented assessment of incidents and emergencies reported to the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Center (IEC) and participates in the preparation, conduct and evaluation of drills and exercises. Additionally, he/she participates in actions in response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies.RoleThe Incident and Emergency Assessment Officer is: (1) a technical expert, developing, maintaining, implementing and improving assessment and prognosis methodologies ( including manuals,procedures, checklists, tools) and associated training materials; (2) a trainer giving lectures and conducting drills and exercises on topics related to the assessment and prognosis methodologies for the Agency’s Incident and Emergency System (IES); (3) and an analyst identifying the relevant criteria and benchmarks in the IAEA Safety Standards, guidelines and operational manuals to be used in the assessment and prognosis process.Functions / Key Results ExpectedDevelop assessment and prognosis methodologies (including manuals, procedures, checklists and tools) for nuclear or radiological incidents and emergencies.
Develop training materials for the training, drills and exercises of the staff within IES and deliver the associated training.
Perform an assessment of a nuclear or radiological incident and emergency, including its potential consequences, analysis of available information and prognosis of possible scenarios, utilizing inputs from the relevant technical specialists within IES.
Coordinate an assessment of a situation during or in the aftermath of a nuclear or radiological incident and emergency utilizing inputs from relevant Divisions of the Agency.
