We are responsible for supporting New Zealand to develop a sustainable relationship with our land, through the delivery of exceptional science across a wide range of disciplines.Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the roleThe Programme Manager supports our vision by:

  • Being responsible for coordinating research projects across the group, maintaining a high-level view of the programme of work and reconciling interdependencies.
  • Overseeing the development and execution of research projects commissioned by the Portfolio Leader, ensuring that the projects are set up to succeed and are supported by high level key performance indicators (KPI’s), and monitoring programme performance.
  • Ensuring that all projects align with the group’s research direction and portfolio objectives and comply with the relevant research and operational standards.

This position is permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week), reports to a Science Group Manager, and can be based on any of our Manaaki Whenua sites (Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Lincoln or Dunedin).We are seeking a Programme Manager for each of our four Science Groups:Group 1: Restoring EcosystemsAotearoa’s unique indigenous biodiversity has been, and continues to be, under pressure from numerous endogenous and exogenous pressures. This group will undertake research and consultancy to support and enhance these aspects for external clients at global, national, and landscape scales.Group 2: Managing Invasive SpeciesInvasive species (i.e. weeds, pests, predators, and diseases) are a key pressure on Aotearoa’s unique biodiversity and ecosystems. These pressures continue to increase because of societal (i.e. human behaviour and values) and global influences (i.e. climate change). This group will underpin the identification and management of these pressures through partnerships with government (MPI, OSPRI, B3, etc) and private industry.Group 3: Catalysing ChangeSupporting Aotearoa to understand, manage, and enact change in response to the societal and regulatory shifts is critical to ensure that we retain and improve our terrestrial environments. Spanning urban, rural, regional and national scales, the Social, Informational, and Geospatial research that this group will undertake will ensure that external agencies are well equipped to respond, and supported to encourage others to as well.Group 4: Land Resources and Climate ChangeThe utilisation of our land resources is critical to support economic, societal, and environmental benefits for Aotearoa. These land resources are also key strengths in understanding our emissions balance and enabling adaptation and resilience to climate change. Central and regional government, along with other external agencies such as industry groups and private companies are key partners to realise these benefits.Ō pūmanawa | About youYou will possess a professional qualification in programme and/or project management and extensive programme and/or management experience at a senior level. A tertiary degree in a relevant field is highly desirable. Strong knowledge and experience in project management methodologies (e.g. PRINCE2, Agile or PMP certification is advantageous) and have strong experience with financial compliance and managing budgeting.
