The Role
As the Discipline Leader – Lethality Modelling and Analysis, you will lead and grow the Capability Modelling and Evaluation Science & Technology Capability’s (STC) ability to analyse and provide decision advice on the generation and employment of warfighting capability to achieve joint effects such as Multi-Domain Strike and Integrated Air and Missile Defence.Your knowledge and skills will enable the discipline to conduct analysis on the effectiveness of systems (e.g. sensors, effectors and combat systems) the associated tactics, techniques and procedures, and the operational environment. Your analysis will inform current Force operations and tactics, acquisition decisions on new capabilities, and shape the future warfighting force. Initially your focus will be supporting Defence’s maritime fleet but you will have an appetite to pivot to other domains if priorities change.The successful candidate will be required to undertake work on and be provided with technical information pertaining to Defence articles of United States of America (US) origin. In accordance with the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), any applicant who holds, or has previously held, citizenship or permanent residency of a country other than Australia will be required to declare and indicate the country or countries of citizenship or permanent residency. Restrictions on access to Defence articles and associated technical data subject to the ITAR by dual national employees may apply.This role is to lead studies, currently primarily focussed in the maritime domain.Your duties will include:

  • Managing stakeholder relationships to ensure that studies undertaken have high impact, with direct and timely utility.
  • Collaboration across Human and Decision Sciences (HADS) and other divisions regarding all relevant aspects of the study.
  • Leading development of your discipline. This includes developing analysis tools and methodologies, sourcing relevant data sources, developing computational models including optimisation and simulation tools etc.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior staff, to develop their knowledge and Operational Analysis skills.
  • Managing academics, contractors and service providers engaged to support tasking and capability.

About our Team
The Capability Analysis and Design (CAD) MSTC is within the Human and Decision Sciences Division of Defence Science and Technology Group. CAD’s mission is to apply and advance Operations Research and Systemic Design methods to allow us to develop analysis based evidence in support of key Defence decisions. The analysis techniques we use include Operations Research; mathematical modelling and computer simulation; data analytics and statistical analysis; Systems Engineering; and experimentation / wargaming. Our work supports the ADF in understanding impact of decisions on the Enhanced Force-In-Being, Objective Integrated Force and Future Integrated Force.Our Ideal Candidate

You are a candidate who is highly motivated and able to provide effective leadership and create a collaborative culture where all staff make an effective contribution to the team outcomes.You have a background with experience in Operations Analysis with a proactive approach to developing and applying innovative techniques, such as optimisation, simulation, numerical analysis, and experimentation.You have experience developing, leading and delivering multi-year programs of analysis activities and a demonstrated ability to lead and conduct complex operations analysis studies including planning, managing a study team, execution and reporting.You have excellent communication skills, the ability to convey complex information, and can collaborate with a wider range of internal and external stakeholders across DSTG, industry universities and overseas partners.

Expected salary: $139681 – 167659 per year
