Job description: About the TeamIn Pakistan, GRC works with local and international partners to strengthen labour rights accountability in the garment sector by empowering workers through awareness-raising sessions, community building, and tailored legal aid. Over the past two years, legal aid centres and women workers’ cafes have become key venues for capacity building and support, fostering a “virtuous circle” of empowerment and legal recourse. As a result of the project, workers report feeling safer in voicing concerns and seeking assistance. This shift in worker confidence marks a significant step toward ensuring justice in high-risk areas by building community trust and resilience against rights abuses.Duty Station: Pakistan – Karachi or IslamabadContract Duration: Initially 6 months with an intention to extend.The RoleWe are seeking a BHR Legal Adviser to support the implementation of project activities involving Civil Society Organisations, international garment brands, and government stakeholders within Pakistan’s garment and apparel sector. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering workshops, multi-stakeholder events, and training courses, and facilitating meetings with relevant stakeholders.
  • Conducting legal research and jurisprudence reviews.
  • Reviewing legal briefs on business-related human rights violations, access to remedy, documentation, and investigation and support in drafting responses for dissemination.
  • Ensuring the smooth delivery of all project-related advocacy work, including launch events, roundtable discussions and briefing sessions.
  • Supporting regular site visits to field legal aid centres to meet field staff and workers.
  • Providing guidance on related international law and regulatory frameworks on business and human rights and associated legislation.

Your Background

  • 4+ years experience in business and human rights, ideally with considerable knowledge in international human rights, criminal and/or humanitarian law.
  • Law degree, admission to the relevant bar and LLM preferred.
  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge on international labour rights and the garment and apparel sector.
  • Sound working knowledge of business and human rights laws and regulations on national and regional level.
  • Research experience desirable (knowledgeable of Pakistani laws and ideally access to local legal databases/repositories).
  • Practical experience working with a variety of clients including businesses, civil society organisations, and governmental institutions.
  • Able to work on their own initiative and with limited supervision.
  • Able to work as part of a multicultural remote team working towards a common goal and respectful of differentiating working approaches.
  • Flexible, versatile, and creative and able to work in a changeable & fast-moving environment.
  • Capable of spontaneously supporting project deliverables that are not in the defined remit where needed.
  • Proactive character, suggesting solutions and approaches, anticipating problems and foresees potential challenges.
  • Fluency in English and Urdu, both written and verbal skills.
