Job description: Job Title AVP, Underwriting, Protection, AustraliaJob DescriptionThe role of AVP, Underwriting, Protection, Australia (externally, Head of Underwriting) involves serving as a senior member of the Underwriting & Claims leadership team across Australia and as part of the Global Underwriting & Claims function. Contributing to regional strategies and initiatives that enhance the company’s underwriting function.As the most senior member of the Underwriting team in Australia, the AVP, Underwriting will be the face of Pacific Life Re with regards to Underwriting matters in Australia and will be expected to maintain strong relationships with Head of and Chief level Underwriters and Claims managers in the market, particularly with our key clients. The focus of the role will be working with clients to develop and maintain an Underwriting proposition that meets client needs as well as being consistent with PLRA’s strategic and risk management focus. In addition, the AVP, Underwriting will be expected to build a high-performance Underwriting team who will be responsible for delivering a high-quality Underwriting expertise and value add to our insurance partners.Duties1. Serve as a member of the Australia Protection Market Leadership Committee (PMLC) and, working closely with other team members, drive the growth of PL Re’s Australian market offering. Together with Deal Teams, be responsible for developing and implementing the market strategy, collaborating on strategic opportunities, aligning efforts to achieve shared goals, and contributing to the overall success of the market.Leverage our strategic analytics capabilities, UnderwriteMe relationships and data, and the global protection underwriting and claims function to create solutions and propositions for both existing and new customers2. Client service: Drive delivery of high-quality service to clients including:Strong team performance against client Service Level AgreementsCredible technical support and client plansRegular visit programme in line with Client PlansImpressive audit experiences, including meaningful and actionable insightTraining support where appropriateWider client service which contributes towards external risk management and differentiates Pacific Life Re as a reinsurance partner of choiceMaintenance of the PLRA Underwriting and risk management strategy3. Underwriting (including retrospective Underwriting opinions) of life, critical illness and disability benefits. Discuss medically complex cases with the external Chief Medical Officer and/or the Chief Underwriting Officer where appropriate4. Build, lead and manage the Australian Underwriting team including:Appropriate, challenging objective settingRegular feedback on performanceStrong staff training and developmentEssential Qualifications & ExperienceKnowledgeTypically educated to at least degree levelProven experience working in a life & disability Underwriting department in an insurance company or reinsurance company environment including experience at a senior levelExperience handling Underwriting for all major AU products including Life cover, Critical Illness, TPD and Income ProtectionTypical completion of or progression towards ALUCA/ANZIIF qualificationsGood working knowledge of Life & Disability Insurance industry regulationsLeadership SkillsStrong management/leadership backgroundTrack record of leading and developing high performance underwriting and / or claims teamsStrong communication (written and verbal) and presentation skillsAble to demonstrate a proven track record of proactive decision makingAbility to establish objectives and build, develop and lead / influence a team towards these objectivesCommercial JudgementStrong analytical skills combined with sound judgement and commercial awarenessProven ability to “think outside the box” to derive new and innovative approaches to underwriting and/or claims problemsAbility and desire to communicate with business customers at all levels across the business and to work well within a team environmentOrganised, conscientious, and deadline focused with an attention to detailAbility to manage competing demands and deal with non-standard and unstructured requests, at short noticeMotivated to take ownership of work and to seek further responsibilityDesirable ExperiencePrevious experience working in a life and disability reinsurance environment is preferredProficiency extracting, manipulating, analysing and drawing conclusions from data.Experience with automated underwriting and / or claims systems.Risk Management Responsibilities
