The Role
As a Chemical Specialist, you will contribute under general direction within a team to execute a range of research and technical programs. You will work within a framework of legislation, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives. You will contribute to Australia’s efforts to mitigate the threats posed by Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) materials by applying science and technology to improve Defence’s hazard management capabilities.This will be achieved by conducting test and evaluation on current decontamination systems, through collaborating with industry/academia and international partners to improve on existing or develop novel decontamination solutions, and by directly contributing to training and operational activities.About our Team
The CBRN Defence Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within DSTG’s Sensors and Effectors Division drives the application of science and technology to solve problems and deliver solutions for the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to prevent, counter and mitigate the effects of chemical and biological agents, and radiological and nuclear materials.The CBHM team represents the Australian Government’s sovereign capability for knowledge of the function, capabilities and limitations of equipment and systems used for the decontamination of primarily chemicals from personnel, equipment and platforms.The CBHM team leads the application of analytical, surface and physical chemistry techniques to understand decontamination of surfaces for remediation of equipment and how best to optimise this process. This includes providing advice on in-service decontamination systems and delivering clear guidance on operating in contaminated environments to user groups and procurement decision makers.Our Ideal Candidate
- The ability to operate under general direction to develop and execute work that generates solutions to scientific problems within time and budget constraints.
- Ability to develop and utilise appropriate test and evaluation methods in order to provide an assessment of military equipment and techniques.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and use bespoke instrumentation.
- Ability to document methodology and train other users is highly desirable.
- Ability to investigate topics and develop skills outside your initial area of expertise.
- Strong skills in the communication of advice, results and conclusions from work programs to diverse audiences including colleagues and Defence clients.
- Work effectively as an individual and in a team, and working collaboratively outside your area of expertise.
- Capacity and willingness to contribute to corporate activities, including regulatory requirements and a commitment to Work Health and Safety practices in the workplace; where previous experience handling and working safely with hazardous chemicals is highly desirable.
Expected salary: $76277 – 104753 per year
