Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country’s collective tomorrow.The Balance Sheet & Transactions team seeks to lift the value of public expenditure, primarily with a capital focus and a long-term outlook. We also aim to understand how the use of balance sheet tools incentivise effective management of capital and operating costs throughout the system. Our current work programme is indicative of these objectives:

  • funding and financing policy (including revision to guidance for the use of PPPs),
  • capital performance and allocation, and
  • risk management (including the development of a captive insurer proposal).

The team is also responsible for delivery of the 2025 Investment Statement (a summary of the health and performance of the Crown balance sheet now and into the future).Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the RoleIn this role you would:

  • Support the development of evidence-based, commercially sound advice and recommendations to support decision makers, including Ministers,
  • Help the team to identify key information gaps and improve the quality of Crown balance sheet information, and
  • Have a broad exposure to a range of Agencies and stakeholders to develop your relationship management and influencing skills.

You will have involvement across the team’s work programme. The team has a number of senior staff that will provide mentoring and guidance as you build a career at the Treasury.Wellington is preferred for location, but Auckland will be considered for the right candidate.Ō pūmanawa | About YouThe work will suit those with commercial or financial markets experience and an interest in policy and problem solving. To be successful in this role you will bring:

  • Experience or interest in financial & commercial advice,
  • Technical capabilities in corporate finance. This could include working towards a CFA or similar qualification,
  • Experience in optimising, or developing new, data to drive policy decisions,
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. This includes the ability to convey complex analysis with clarity and conviction, including to non-specialists,
  • An ability to connect with and influence others,
  • A commitment to teamwork and a ‘can do’ attitude.
