Job description: Staff Nurse Pre-Assessment ClinicPermanent, Full TimeRef: 2025/35Details of ServiceTo provide nursing care in accordance with best practice, standards and hospital policyReporting RelationshipThe post-holder will be responsible to the Assistant Director of Midwifery and Nursing and will report to the unit/ward manager regarding all aspects of his / her work.Key Working RelationshipsThe post holder will work closely with:· Midwifery / nursing team and multi disciplinary team· Anaesthetic ConsultantsPurpose of the PostThe post-holder will be responsible to the Assistant Director of Midwifery and Nursing and will report to the unit/ward manager regarding all aspects of his / her work.Principal Duties and Responsibilities· Conduct telephone assessments for patients attending for routine surgery· Maintain clear and effective communication channels between all relevant departments to optimise the patients surgical journey· Ensure patients receive all necessary information regarding their upcoming admission, anaesthetic procedure, surgical intervention, pre and post-operative care and discharge requirements· Ensure patients have adequate information to enable them to give informed consent for their procedure· Recognise and respect the individuality of each patient· Foster a patient friendly environment that upholds dignity, respect and consideration for cultural diversity and religious beliefs· Undertake any other duties that may be deemed appropriate by Management
- Identify clinical risk and liaise with the CMM2 and CMM3 to ensure the accurate reporting of near misses and incidents, investigate and ensure action is taken to prevent future incidences
- Function effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team and ensure effective communications intra and inter departmentally
- Adhere to best practice, recent research and new developments in Theatre Services.
- Participate in audit, development of ongoing practices and outcomes in Theatre
- Act as an advocate for patients and families by demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the needs of patients undergoing surgery
- Demonstrate vision, innovation and flexibility in Nursing Theatre practice
- Incorporate Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann policies and guidelines for Nurses and Midwives into Theatre practices and standards
- Be aware of and comply with the policy on Staff Responsibility for the Protection and Welfare of Children
Administration
- Ensure that all resources are utilised cost effectively
- Report accidents/incidents in accordance with guidelines
- Undertake administrative duties in the absence of the Midwife Manager or as outlined by the Midwife Manager
- Report complaints at Departmental level
- Ensure routine cleaning and domestic services are carried out
Research and Audit
- Take an active part in the evaluation of care and assist in the development of research-based nursing guidelines (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann – Guidance to Nurses and Midwives on the Development of Policies, Guidelines and Protocols, 2000)
- Participate in hospital audit/research activities
- Identify audit topics to the departmental manager and participate in their assessment, evaluation and presentation where appropriate
- Maintain Baby Friendly Hospital Accreditation standards
Education and Training
- Ensure that the learning environment reflects the guidelines of Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Guidelines on the Key Points That May Be Considered when Developing a Quality Clinical Environment, 2003)
- Assist with the orientation, education and professional development of new midwifery/nursing staff and students (act as a mentor and role model)
- Keep up to date with new developments in nursing care and reflect this in care given
- Maintain high standards in clinical skills, and continuously update both practice and education (e.g. adult and infant resuscitation, breast feeding, manual handling, fire safety and other relevant areas)
- Ensure that the appropriate up-to-date information is readily available for patients, families and staff
- Assess own personal training and educational needs, and ensure that they are met
- Participate in the Hospital Performance Planning and Development System
- Participate in department meetings
ProfessionalEnsure professional practice is within the legal and regulatory framework applying to the Republic of IrelandEligibility CriteriaQualifications and/ or experienceCandidates must be:
- Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the General Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann)
And
- Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability, (including a high standard of clinical and administrative capacity), for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
