Job title: 06356 Postdoctoral Researcher in Assessment of existing concrete bridge structures through proof-loading methods
Company: Aalborg Universitet
Job description: At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment (AAU BUILD), a position as Postdoc within bridge proof loading- and strengthening assessment in Copenhagen is open for appointment from 1 July 2025 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year.JobbeskrivelseThe Department of the Built Environment focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. The research projects involve both theoretical research and in situ measurements along with laboratory experiments. As an employee at the Department of the Built Environment, you become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaborations. The postdoc position is offered in connection with ongoing sustainable research projects at AAU regarding service life extension of existing concrete bridges. The position will primarily regard proof loading assessment of existing bridges but may also be associated with other research projects and splinter projects(such as prestressed CFRP strengthening assessments). The primary ongoing research project on concrete bridge proof loading is a collaboration with The Danish Road Directorate(Vejdirektoratet) and involves the assessment of existing concrete slab bridges through three main research fields in a multidisciplinary approach: * Testing and monitoring
These three research fields are essential when developing the background for structural assessment from a proof-loading perspective. The postdoc position will primarily focus on the field of”Testing and monitoring” in laboratory- and in-situ conditions. When proof load testing and thus performing structural response assessment, a significant focus will be dedicated to representative testing approaches, monitoring methods, data acquisition, and result handling in the multidisciplinary perspective(e.g., identifying target loads, stopping criteria, response verification- and validation, etc.). In this regard, some additional perspectives and evaluations related to prestressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers(CFRP) strengthening solutions will be considered. The postdoc position will be highly experimental, with evaluations ranging from material samples, sub-components, system components and combined systems, large-scale specimens, and in-situ full-scale testing of bridges.A special focus will be on assessing structures evaluated to provide a potentially brittle failure mode(such as non-shear-reinforced concrete slabs, connections, etc.). Apart from the direct assessment of such structural concrete applications, the candidate will get the opportunity to work with novel sustainable strengthening solutions such as ductile carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) strengthening prestressing systems. In connection with the experimental work, the Postdoc is expected to take an active role in developing personal skills in communicating, teaching, and working in a cross-disciplinary collaboration; this includes supervising student projects and other activities relevant to the collaboration. The research activities offer a well-scoped research direction yet simultaneously accommodate autonomy in research activities within the broader scope of the project and research topic. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on subject-relevant journals and conferences, while practitioner-oriented dissemination is part of the project’s dissemination activities with the industrial partners. Reporting and dissemination related to Danish industrial collaborators will be a high priority.Limited teaching can be expected within the research area(and in other study programs at the University).A prerequisite for a successful application is to demonstrate scientific expertise and experience within most of the areas below:
In addition, the ideal candidate has:
Qualification requirements:Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications.
